The first thing that you need to decide before you do any research is the duration of your holidays. How many days you are going to spend in a Mcleodganj Dharamshala depending on your leaves and budget constraints? This is very important as you can decide on places of visit as per your budget and leave focusing only on a specific search on the internet.

Whether it’s a short or long vacation, the first thing you need to freeze is your arrival and departure dates.
Once your dates are finalized, make sure you book your tickets Dharamshala. Mcleodganj is located in Upper Dharamshala and most of the buses from all parts of Delhi Punjab Haryana, Jammu will go up to ISBT Dharamshala. Spice Jet and Air India offer daily flights from IGI Delhi to Gaggal Airport Dharamshala. Check for various low Air fare offers to Dharamshala from Delhi. You can get a flight for as low as Rupees 3000 from Delhi Dharamshala during the offer period from the airline.

The nearest Broad Guage Railway station from Dharamshala is Pathankot and Chakki Bank. Both stations are part of Pathankot. Dharamshala is about 80 kms from Pathankot and frequent buses are available from Pathankot to Dharamshala. You can also get a shared Taxi from outside station at a reasonable price. However if you want to enjoy the Toy Train you can travel from Pathankot till Kangra Mandir from where Dharamshala is about 22 Kms. The trains take around 5 hours to cover this distance but the bus will take only 3 hours to reach Dharamshala from Pathankot.

Tourists from various cities of Punjab like Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar, Ferozpur, Patiala,Pathankot, Gurdaspur, etc, Chandigarh, Jammu, Ambala, can reach Dharamshala by bus. This is the best option because the distance is less and you do not have to change transport after getting down from train. You will reach there in less than 7 hours. 

From Delhi you have all the three options, Bus Air and Train. Buses take around 10-12 hours to reach Dharamshala from Delhi. Generally the road condition is good in this route so you can also drive down. However it is recommended that you go by bus train or air and then hire a taxi if you are not familiar with the driving in hilly areas.

Once your booking is done you need to finalize on destinations and sightseeing places to be covered in Dharamshala Mcleodganj. Your trip will now depend on the number of days you have finalized so you need to balance between the number of days you have and your interests.

Main Tourist Attractions and Destinations in and around Dharamshala
Mcleodganj – Not to miss the The Budhist Monastery of His Highness The Dalai Lama. His residence is also nearby and if you are lucky you may get to listen to his preaching. The typical Tibetan Market is very vibrant and colorful in Mcleodganj. Make sure that you have a good bargaining power if you buying stuff here. 

The Tibetan Restaurants in Mcleodganj will serve excellent Tibetan and Chines food.
Do not miss the St John’s church here in Mcleodganj. It is surrounded by huge Deodar trees with an amazing view of the Kangra Valley on one side and Dhauladhar ranges on the other.

Bhagsu Nag Temple and Bhagsu Water Fall – Located about 2 Kms from Mcleodganj Bhagsu is a beautiful place and must see. There is an ancient temple with natural stream of water, serene landscape, enchanting view of the snow clad Dhualadhar Range and above all a divine peace here. You can trek through the enthralling mountains for one km to watch the beautiful water fall in Bhagsu.

Naddi Village and Dal lake – This is one of the best tourist spots in Upper Dharamshala. If I plan to visit there I would love to walk down from Mcleodganj to Naddi Village watching the Dal lake on the way and that too early in the morning. Again it depends on the time you have. You would love to see this splendor multiple times.

Triund Trekking via Dharamkot village– While in Mcleodganj Dharamshala there are lot of adventurous activities you can plan. One of them is trekking to Triund which is about 7 kms from Mcleodganj on top of the hill. The journey through the hills with a mesmerizing view of the Kangra Valley is a true delight.
On the way you can see the beautiful Deodar and Pine trees along with some distinct flora of this region. There is guest house at Triund and if you have plans to stay overnight then make sure that you book your room in advance at the Forest Office located in lower Dharamshala. I strongly recommend this place because it truly gives you a heavenly feeling out there.

Indru Nag Temple, Khanyara – Ancient Nag and Shiva Temple is located on the hill top here. For adventure sports lovers this is the place where you can go for Paragliding. Indru Nag even has lot of resorts to relax located amidst pines and Deodar trees. Take a walk alongside the small rever near Khanyara.

Dharamshala Market – There is a big market in Dharamshala known as Kotwali Bazaar. Restaurants here are good and economical and serve quality and delicious multi cuisine. You can go for Himachali Shawls from government approved Shawl Emporiums in Dharamshala. History lovers can see the Kangra Art Museum located here.

HPCA International Cricket Stadium – It is one of the best and most beautiful stadiums in the world. It is open for the tourists when the matches are not played. Do not miss the chance to see the world class stadium. Aveda restaurant inside the HPCA stadium serves excellent meals.

Norbulignka Sidhpur, Tapovan Ashram – A temple and Ashram located amidst Pine Jungle is very serene and peaceful place. In Sidhpur there is a Tibetan Institute which is very ornate and colorful and meat for preserving the Tibetan culture.

Masroor Rock Cut Temples – The Rock Cut Temples in Masroor is a spectacular sight located about 40 kms from Dharamshala. Go and see the miraculously built temples on the rocks.

Kangra Fort – The fort that was never conquered is located about 20 Kms from Dharamshala in Kangra town

Pong Dam – Also known as Maharana Pratap sagar is located about 55 kms from Dharamshala.
This lake sanctuary at the Pong Lake is one of the beautiful attractions for the tourists because it is attraction for the migratory ducks from Siberian region during winter. You can also see thousands of ducks in the swamp area between Shahnahar barrage and Pong Dam and the surrounding shallow waters of the lake.
Above all the clear and blue water of Maharana Pratap sagar all around with the panoramic view of Dhauladhar Ranges and Kangra Valley make the visit to Ransar Island an unforgettable experience.

Kareri Lake and Kareri Village – This is one place for the nature and adventure lovers. Very isolated and still unexplored by the tourists. You can take a trek to Kareri which is about 12 km trek from Mcleodganj passing through Dal lake, Satobari and Ghera leads to Kareri village.
The picturesque trek overlooks the flat and fertile lands of Himachal and Punjab, seems to stretch on to infinity. You can book the Forest Rest House in advance if you plan to stay over night in Kareri village. Need not to miss the exquisite Kareri Lake about 13 km from the village and at an altitude of 3200 meters.

Tea gardens Tea Factory in Narghota – Very few people know that there are huge Tea gardens located on the outskirts of Dharamshala. The idyllic Narghota Village is surrounded by Tea Gardens overlooking the majestic Dhauladhar ranges. From ISBT Dharamshala go towards Cheelgari and take Narghota Road to get the amazing feel of the dust free zones and Tea gardens on both sides of the road for 3 kms. The tea manufactured here is of premium quality and most of it is exported to the European countries

Famous Temples in and around Dharamshala
Mata Chamunda Devi Temple – The famous Chamunda Devi Temple is located about 15 kms from Dharamshala on the Palmpur road.
Kunal Pathari Mata Temple – Located amidst lush pines and tea gardens Mata Kunal Pathari Temple is located about 4 kms from Dharamshala bus stand.
Bajreshwari Devi Temple – It is located in the Kangra town about 18 kms from Dharamshala.
Jwalaji Temple – The famous temple is located in Jwalamukhi about 40 Kms from Dharamshala
Chitpurni Mata Temple – It is about 60 kms from Dharamshala
Shiva Temple Baijnath – The ancient Shiva Temple in Baijnath is about 45 Kms from Dharamshala
